Our customers kept asking about the special items used on Gary's flies.
Getting into the business of supplying fly tying materials has been great.

What is the most frustrating problem with Antron yarn? Finding it.

It is a miracle material -- just look in any fly tying catalog and you’ll see how it has been embraced since it was first used on the Sparkle Pupa in 1972. But there are many different types of Antron, and only one type is correct for LaFontaine patterns.

It's getting harder and harder to find the brand name knitting yarns that have Antron; and it's impossible to get all of the good colors. To ensure that we'll always have the right type of Antron available for our customers, and for our own flies, we contracted for production runs of custom colors of the perfect yarn.

Sometime in the past Umpqua Feather Merchants began tying the Sparkle Pupa patterns with a bright fluorescent green yarn. Our private tyers continued to used the Dark Green per Gary’s instructions. At one point, we had Umpqua use Gary’s dark green and there were protests from fly shop owners far and wide. Their customers liked the bright green. If you can't beat ‘em, join ‘em -- now you have a choice; use the color that best matches the caddis in your area.
