The videos trigger a lot of questions about the tools Gary used for various techniques. Many of those fly tying tools are "homemade." They’re not homemade by Gary -- but they’re made in someone’s home. A friend worked with Gary’s ideas and came up with solutions for common fly tying problems. Tom Trozera (who, in his other life, happens to be one of the top stress metal analysts in the world) designed tools based on Gary’s suggestions and ideas.

The one tool people always ask about is the "loop tool" they see Gary and Paul Stimpson using in videos and at demonstrations. It seems simple enough -- it has to be short (so it doesn’t drag on the table), heavy (so it twirls fast), and perfectly balanced (so it spins true). It’s the last one (perfectly balanced) that’s the kicker. It takes a computer-programmed lathe to turn out perfect loop tools every time. That is how Tom makes the Spinner. It’s ideal for the Double Magic technique for the Twist Nymph.

You can see the Spinner on Gary’s videos. You may see Paul Stimpson using it during a demonstrations of one of Gary’s patterns at a show. And he often makes appearances at fly shops in the Utah, Wyoming, and sometimes Montana areas.
