Flex Hooks

Flex patterns by Gary LaFontaine have a long history of fish catching success. The ability to create that "flex" movement or twitch of the natural insect is a big trigger for big fish. While these have always been a regular item for the Book Mailer, as time progressed some of the original parts were discontinued from the suppier. We had subsituted for them the best we could, but it still wasn't perfect. Even Gary's had only choices from hook sizes that were too big and the eye is too small for the extension to fit and flex easily in.

But not any longer...
With undaunting research from Al Beatty & the Book Mailer which included much time finding & trying various different hooks, has
finally emerged what we feel is the perfect flex hook. By using a High Carbon Steel hook and custom sized extensions we have adjusted the sizes to reflect a "natural size" for the original Lafonaine Flex patterns, the Hopper, Cicada, Stone and Hex; and for the newer patterns highlighted in LaFontaine Legacy, the Flex-Damsel, Flex-Dragon, Flex-Sculpin and the Floating Flex-Crayfish.
The "flex" is now perfect—tie 'em up and get them on the water!

Gary LaFontaine's research for The Dry Fly - New Angles included a full season studying grasshoppers and the way trout reacted to them.
One of the big discoveries that summer was that trout were often suspicious of both the insect and the imitation floating on the water.
They often studied hoppers (and other large insects) before deciding whether or not to take them.
They ignored the long, straight shank of a large hook and frequently refused large flies.
What were they looking for? A bit of movement -- a flexing of that long body!

nothing demonstrates the possibilities of the technique and hook style better than the actual flies.
But our customers are welcome to purchase the following packages without
sample flies either initially or subsequently.
