~ Fish line up for the "Magic Act" ~
WHITE MARKER
Astounding sales for the White Marker since Carl Richards wrote an article in Fly Fisherman Magazine about caddisflies and this great "anchor line" trick.
The Magic of the White Marker
Ever since Caddisflies (p. 96-98) there has been a devoted group of anglers using a marker to color the last few inches of their tippets "white" for nymph fishing. In the book this is called the "Magic Act" because the fishing can subsequently seem quite miraculous.
The "magic act" is really a modern adaptation of the old Maine trick of using white sewing thread for a tippet. The white thread imitates the silk anchor line of the abundant blackfly larvae in the northland streams.
Not only blackfly larvae, but also various species of silk-making caddisflies attach an anchor line to a rock or stick; and when they are swept away the white line either hold or breaks (either way serving as a white "gobble me" sign).
~ What does it do?
It is used to simulate the white silk anchor line used to protect caddis larvae from dislodgment. The anchor line is very distinctive and trout many times respond to this stimulus and swim toward it before recognizing the larvae.
~ How do I use it?
Shake the white marker (a valve flow) and color the last two inches of your tippet. There is no need to change tippets as the white color is easily wiped off of any monofilament surface.
~ When is the best time to use it?
Use it where caddisfly larvae are prominent. The marker is also small enough to keep in your vest for immediate access.
An ordinary marker won't work for this trick. It has to be an opaque, metal marker. Many customers have had trouble finding them, so -- here they are!
